Following the death of their son, Amber and Tim Shoemake came home to find an unexpected form of communication.

Leland Shoemake, 6, had been battling Balamuthia mandrillaris for the past month.

"When Tim and I came home for the first time to get (Leland's) clothes to be buried in, this is the note we found from him on the table in the living," Amber wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.  "We have no idea when he wrote it but you can tell he was always a special child."

The note reads: "Still with you. Thank you Mom & Dad. Love. good (bye)."

Leland, 6, died from an amoebic infection in his brain on Sept. 25. He had been battling Balamuthia mandrillaris for the past month.

Conditions for him had been deteriorating, according to his parents' post on Facebook.

“He’s being kept sedated but his pressures keep spiking,” the post said. “They did a ct and it shows swelling in the brain and decreased overall quality of his brain. Also it looked like the infection has gotten worse. I’m broken.”

Leland's family, of Georgia, said that donations can be sent to a GoFundMe page that has been set up in his name. So far, they have raised $9,023 of the $10,000 goal.
