The Cleveland Indians’ first outing since their 16-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the early-morning hours Thursday, started well, but the end result was not what they were hoping for against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Indians (9-8) struggled offensively and gave starting pitcher Trevor Bauer only one run of support in a 3-1 loss to the Orioles (6-14) in Oriole Park at Camden Yards Friday night.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead over the Orioles with an RBI from designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion in the top of the first inning.

Second baseman Jason Kipnis ignited the brief rally when he smacked a one-out single to right field and moved into scoring position after third baseman Jose Ramirez drew a walk in a seven-pitch at-bat. Outfielder Michael Brantley singled to center field to load the bases, and Encarnacion drove in the game’s first run when he was hit by a pitch from Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy, but the Indians could not extend their lead.

Although the Indians scored first, the Orioles drew even when shortstop Manny Machado belted a 3-0 fastball from Bauer over the wall in center field for the game-tying home run.

The Orioles took the lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Catcher Chance Sisco led off the frame by getting hit with a pitch, and then, second baseman Luis Sardinas singled to right field, which moved Sisco from first base to third. After starting in a 1-2 hole, left fielder Trey Mancini followed with a double to the wall in center field, which brought around both Sisco and Sardinas for the go-ahead runs.

While the Indians had multiple chances to push more runs across the plate, they went just one for nine with runners in scoring position against the Orioles.

Brantley hit a two-out double to right field in the top of the third inning, but Encarnacion grounded out to second base for the final out of the frame.

Pinch hitter Brandon Guyer came on for center fielder Bradley Zimmer with one out in the top of the seventh inning and doubled to right field, but bookend groundouts from shortstop Francisco Lindor and Ramirez around a walk to Kipnis short-circuited a potential rally.
