11-year-old dead in Streetsboro shooting, brother arrested

The victim's 13-year-old brother is now facing charges of aggravated murder.

STREETSBORO, Ohio -- The Streetsboro Police Department is investigating the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy.

The department confirmed the news that a child sustained a gunshot wound on Alden Drive shortly before 9:30 p.m. He later died at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center.

Streetsboro Police say the victim's 13-year-old brother is now facing charges of aggravated murder and is being held at the Portage County Juvenile Detention Center. He's scheduled for arraignment Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators believe the gun used in the crime was stolen from the teen's grandfather's home. Police also believe the shooting was premeditated.

WKYC is not publishing the names of the boys involved.

Police reports show officers responded to the home just last week, when one of the boys was reported for misbehaving by his stepmother on Thursday. According to the report, the boy made comments indicating he wanted to harm himself. No further action was taken, the report states.

Officers also responded to the home in March 2015, where the boys' father was arrested for violating a protection order. According to the report, the protection order was filed in 2012 and the father since gained full custody of the boys. Investigators did not find any evidence of abuse, the report states.

The Streetsboro School District acknowledged the shooting on its website, stating the 11-year-old was a fifth grader within the district. Grief counselors will be available at Henry Defer Intermediate and Middle School Tuesday. State testing has been canceled at those schools, according to the district website.
