Two years after a school shooting devastated their community, Madison Township school board members voted unanimously to allow armed staff in the school district – despite objections from one of the students who was shot in 2016.

It's a controversial conversation no matter where it takes place. But the topic hits home especially hard in Madison Township, the rural Butler County community that had its own school shooting two years ago.

Tonight, at a school board meeting, officials are expected to discuss a resolution that would give the superintendent authority to designate school staff who could carry weapons, as long as they participate in active-shooter training and have a concealed carry license.

The idea was first discussed at last month's school board meeting. In attendance that night was one of the students shot in the school cafeteria two years ago.

As officials talked through the training that would be required, Cooper Caffrey put his head in his hands. The 15-year-old told his dad he wanted to come to every future school board meeting to make sure that didn't happen.
