Cleveland Indians reliever Andrew Miller exited tonight's game against the Chicago Cubs at Progressive Field with an apparent left leg injury.

CLEVELAND -- While the Cleveland Indians homered their way to a hard-fought 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Progressive Field Wednesday night, there was cause for some concern in the latter stages of the game.

With two outs and a runner on, left-handed reliever Andrew Miller was called from the bullpen to relieve starter Trevor Bauer, but after throwing his second pitch to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, which was a ball off of the outside corner of the plate, reached for the back of his left knee as he walked off the mound at Progressive Field.

After getting the ball back from catcher Yan Gomes, Miller took the mound, but almost immediately waved his glove in the direction of the Indians’ dugout. A member of the medical staff and manager Terry Francona came to the mound, and moments later, Miller was escorted to the dugout, and subsequently, to the training room for evaluation.

“It’s his left hamstring, kind of behind the knee a little bit,” Francona said following the win. “He’s had it before, had it in Baltimore he’s said. We’re going to get him MRI-ed. The hope is that last time, it was three or four days. That would really be the hope. We’ll know a lot more.”

After the initial statement, Francona clarified that Miller’s issues in Baltimore did not occur on the recent road trip, but rather “three or four years ago.”

This season, the 6-foot-7, 205-pound Miller has thrown 10 innings in 11 appearances with 17 strikeouts against just four walks and six hits for the Central Division-leading Indians. Miller has yet to allow a run during the 2018 season.

In parts of three seasons with the Indians, Miller has registered 158 strikeouts over 101.2 innings of work with only 15 earned runs and 49 hits allowed. Miller has a 9-3 record with six saves since being acquired by the Indians in a mid-season trade with the New York Yankees in the 2016 season.

“I think him not throwing another pitch was really smart on his part, and hopefully, that’s all it is,” Francona said.
