Cleveland Browns trade CB Jamar Taylor to Arizona Cardinals

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Cleveland Browns are finalizing a trade of cornerback Jamar Taylor to the Arizona Cardinals.

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns have traded cornerback Jamar Taylor to the Arizona Cardinals, the team announced Saturday.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was the first to report the trade. The Browns sent the sixth-year cornerback to the Cardinals for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 5-foot-11, 192-pound Taylor played in 31 games over two seasons with the Browns, making 119 total tackles, including 94 solo stops and 25 assists, combining on one sack, defending 23 passes and intercepting three others, which he returned for 43 yards.

In April of 2016, Taylor’s career with the Miami Dolphins ended with a draft-day trade to the Browns, and the veteran defensive back was a welcomed addition to a secondary besieged by injuries and free-agent departures in the last two seasons.

In 15 games for the Browns in 2016, Taylor registered 57 total tackles, including 46 solo stops, 13 passes defended and three interceptions, all of which were career highs and helped earn him a three-year contract extension.

“It means that we are loyal to our team, and we know that we are building something special around here,” Taylor said shortly after signing his extension last offseason.

“We know it is going to take hard work. It is going to take dedication and all those things, but we want to be a part of something bigger than just us. I think that shows what type of organization, what type of teammates we have in this building.”

The Cardinals are getting a cornerback who does not lack for confidence.

At one point during training camp last summer, Taylor said he could be a top-five cornerback in the NFL, and while some scoffed at his remarks, he finished with a career year from a tackles standpoint, registering 62 total stops, including 48 solo efforts and 14 assists, in 2017.

“No doubt. No doubt about it. No doubt. Top-five corner,” fellow Browns cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun said of Taylor during training camp last summer. “No doubt in my mind that he could be that.

“Just the way he works and his skillset. If he was a craftsman, he would have a lot the tools in his tool box. I am not a tool guy, so I am not going to try to name all the tools he has, but I am just saying the guy can play off, he can play inside and he can go back and play safety. He can play middle linebacker if you ask him to because he is just that versatile. When you talk about off the field, he is the guy that does all the right things.”
