Cleveland Indians place OF Leonys Martin on DL with non-baseball condition, recall Greg Allen

Prior to their Thursday afternoon matinee with the Minnesota Twins, the Cleveland Indians announced they have placed outfielder Leonys Martin on the 10-day disabled list.

CLEVELAND -- Just prior to their Thursday afternoon matinee with the Minnesota Twins, the Cleveland Indians' outfield took yet another hit.

Nearly a week after acquiring him from the Detroit Tigers at the non-waiver trade deadline, the Indians have placed outfielder Leonys Martin on the 10-day disabled list with a non-baseball condition. In Martin's absence, the Indians have recalled Greg Allen from Triple-A Columbus.

Although he wasn't placed on the DL until Thursday, Martin's illness first came into play on Wednesday, when he missed Cleveland's 5-2 victory over the Twins. According to Indians manager Terry Francona, the 30-year-old outfielder was dealing with "intestinal turmoil."

With Martin unavailable -- and Allen still in Columbus -- the Indians started Brandon Guyer in center field for the first time all season. After pinch-hitting for Melky Cabrera, Rajai Davis then took over in center, with Guyer shifting to right field.

In six games with the Indians, Martin has hit 5-for-15, with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. On the season, he's batting .255 to go along with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs.

The Indians acquired the eight-year major league veteran last week in an effort to replenish an outfield that has often been depleted throughout the 2018 season. But while Bradley Zimmer, Lonnie Chisenhall and Tyler Naquin have each been placed on the disabled list with long-term injuries, it appears Martin's stint on the DL will end sooner rather than later.

Having won six of their last eight games, the Indians will cap their four-game series with the Twins at Progressive Field on Thursday with a 1:10 p.m. start.
