Jarvis Landry: Never Doubt Six, Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield

CLEVELAND -- “Never Doubt Six.”

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has been counted out and doubted by many people in his career, as evidenced by the fact that he was a walk-on at two different colleges, but wide receiver Jarvis Landry has a pretty high opinion of the first-year signal-caller.

And Landry’s faith in Mayfield was rewarded, as the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner put on a strong performance in relief of starter Tyrod Taylor in a 21-17 come-from-behind victory over the New York Jets at FirstEnergy Stadium Thursday night.

“Never doubt 6,” Landry said. “Never doubt 6. Never doubted him.

“Just the mentality, the attitude that he has always approached it since he stepped into this building. Never doubted him. I don’t think there is a coach or a player in this building who has doubted him or felt like we were in a disadvantage when he came onto the field. That is something that you have to love about him. That is why he was the first pick. That is why he was the Heisman Trophy winner. You saw it tonight first hand.”

With Taylor suffering a concussion in the first half, Mayfield entered the game, completed 17 of his 23 attempts for 201 yards and led the Browns on four scoring drives, all of which combined to give Cleveland its first victory in 635 days.

“For Bake to come in right before half, it is just a testament,” Landry said. “I promise you, it is just a testament to how he has worked since the day he stepped into this building and not having that backup mentality. He was so ready for this moment. He was prepared for this moment. He grabbed it by the horns.”

Prior to Mayfield entering the game, the Browns’ offense sputtered through the first half, as Taylor struggled to find any kind of a rhythm and completed just four of his 14 attempts for 19 yards before the concussion brought his night to a premature end.

Not one to shy away from the moment, Mayfield came out firing and completed back-to-back throws for a combined 31 yards, and after being stripped of the football on a sack, came back and threw a 16-yard completion to wide receiver Jarvis Landry on the ensuing play.

Mayfield completed three of his four attempts for 47 yards on his first drive of the game, which resulted in a 45-yard field goal from rookie kicker Greg Joseph, who was signed Monday and had just one full day of practice to acclimate himself to the team.

“He is special,” Landry said. “He is really special. Last week, I had a chance to sit down with him after the compliment from (Saints quarterback) Drew Brees. He did not get a big head or anything.

“He took advantage of the moment and the opportunity. We always have seen him make these plays. As far back as when the Baker Mayfield story started, he has always made these types of plays. It is awesome to be a part of it.”

As for how good Mayfield can be moving forward, Landry did not hold back in making a bold prediction.

“As bright as these lights,” Landry said in the press conference room at FirstEnergy Stadium. “As bright as these lights. Anything else would be an understatement.”
