Interim coach Gregg Williams says Myles Garrett's comments after the Cleveland Browns' 33-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field last week are a "non-issue" for him.

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey did not reveal too much about the team’s latest coaching search, but he did confirm one person who will get an interview with the “senior management” of the organization: Gregg Williams.

The Browns’ interim coach for the last two games, including a 28-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons at FirstEnergy Stadium last Sunday, Williams will get an opportunity to take over the head-coaching job on a permanent basis when the interviews take place in January.

“I’ll just get this out of the way right now, Gregg will get interviewed for the head-coaching position,” Dorsey said in the opening statement of his mid-season press conference at team headquarters in Berea Wednesday morning.

“I think he deserves that.”

Williams maintains his role of defensive coordinator while also serving as the interim coach, and in the two games since his taking on the additional responsibilities, he has instilled a higher level of discipline within the locker room.

The Browns have been penalized 11 times for 58 yards in the last two games. The 20 and 38 yards of infractions against the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons, respectively, are the two games with the fewest amount of penalty yardage surrendered this season.

“The last two weeks, I think Gregg has done a really nice job in terms of having this team focused on the task at hand, which is winning,” Dorsey said. “He’s put some discipline in there. He’s reduced the number of penalties, which I think is good. I think he’s done a really nice job.

“I’ve always been a believer of you play the game like you practice, and I think these practices have been very competitive. They’ve been very structured. They’ve been very disciplined and guys have had some energy, and that’s the difference I see. There’s been a focus on the little things, which I think is important.”

While impressed with Williams’ abilities as interim coach, Dorsey expects a sharpened focus out of the coaching staff and players when the Browns return from their bye-week break to begin preparations for next Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown in Cincinnati.

And that is especially true given the fact that the Bengals hired former Browns coach Hue Jackson as a senior assistant to coach Marvin Lewis earlier this week.

“Emphasize the winning, continue to coach your respective players, have players begin to develop and end the season strong and I think that’s important,” Dorsey said. “Let’s be competitive in each and every game the next seven weeks.

“If we continue to win and build and finish strong, that’s all you can ask for. That’s what I ask for is play every game tough and let’s see if we can put some back-to-back wins here. Let’s see if we can get a positive outcome at the end of the season here.”
