CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns have a coaching search to commence during the offseason after the 2018 season is complete, but general manager John Dorsey promises to keep things close to the vest as the organization moves forward with their first search under his direction.

Dorsey says the Browns’ senior management team will be kept small as they look to find Hue Jackson’s permanent replacement after his mid-season firing following a Week 8 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“We’ll keep it tight,” Dorsey said in a mid-season press conference at team headquarters in Berea Wednesday. “We won’t say very much.

“I’ve been around an organization where the head coach reported to the GM. I’ve been in an organization where the head coach and GM reported to ownership, but the most important thing I’ve always seen and observed is that inter-daily working relationship between the head coach and general manager and they’re all on the same page getting this thing moving in the proper direction. I think that’s the most important thing.”

When pressed for who would make up the senior management team, Dorsey did not reveal who will be a part of the decision-making process, other than saying it would be “members of the Cleveland Brown organization.”

“I’m not going to say,” Dorsey said three times before moving onto the next question. “Let me put it this way. We had the first pick in the draft last year. I didn’t say very much. I’m not going to say very much because the importance of this selection, who that person will be, so I’m not going to say much.”

Although Dorsey would not name members of the Browns’ senior management team, he did say owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam would be well informed throughout the candidate selection/interview process.

“Dee and Jimmy, they own the team, so I think with ownership, what you have to do is sometimes -- not sometimes -- but you sit down and communicate,” Dorsey said. “Any good organization will communicate as these hard decisions are being made, and then, we, as a senior management team, will say, ‘Here’s who we think is best for this organization moving forward.’”

While Dorsey and his senior management team continue their search for candidates to fill the head-coaching vacancy, there is the matter of finishing the 2018 regular season after the Browns return from the bye-week break.

The Browns (3-6-1) have six games left, including three within the AFC North Division against the Cincinnati Bengals (twice) and in the season finale at the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium, and Dorsey wants to see a team that comes together through the adversity of a mid-season upheaval on the coaching staff and turns it into a strong finish.

“If we continue to win and build and finish strong, that’s all you can ask for,” Dorsey said. “That’s what I ask for is play every game tough and let’s see if we can put some back-to-back wins here. Let’s see if we can get a positive outcome at the end of the season here.”
