Pothole season keeps Akron road crews busy

"It’s an endless battle, especially in the winter time," said Akron Highway Maintenance Superintendent Anthony Dolly. "You just never know what you’re going to get."

AKRON, Ohio — When the roads are clear from snow and ice, the potholes begin to surface.

It's a problem that comes up often during the winter season as the temperature fluctuates. There’s no doubt there's been a cycle of "freezing and thawing" this season, but the city of Akron reports decrease in the amount of service requests that have been filed compared to the same time last year.

Despite the drop, there still have been a few hundred requests this season which has kept road crews busy.

"It’s an endless battle, especially in the winter time," said Akron Highway Maintenance Superintendent Anthony Dolly. " You just never know what you’re going to get."

Dolly said keeping up with the repairs works best when residents provide feedback on problem areas. One resident posted a photo of a pothole on Storer Avenue with added attention to its depth and size. About 24 hours later, the city of Akron snapped their own photo showing the repair.

"We take all the help we can get," said Dolly.

The help also comes in the form of reviewing a variety of patching options. The city of Akron is using a cold mix for a temporary patch and a hot mix when the weather warms up for a more permanent solution. Some cities like Lorain have invested in new technology like "Aquaphalt" that can repair the craters in wet and cold conditions. It’s a product that Akron has considered.

"It does work, but it’s at a cost."

The product is more expensive than the city's current mix, but Dolly said the city is always reviewing their work.
