AKRON, Ohio — A 23-year-old woman is in serious condition after her boyfriend shot her in the back while she was walking with her three young children and another mother and child, according to Akron police.

Police responded to E. Exchange Street and South Arlington shortly after five p.m. The boyfriend, also a father to his girlfriend's youngest son, got into an argument with his girlfriend and opened fire. The 23-year-old was shot in the back while trying to guard her children. The other mother fled to a nearby gas station with her child.

A security guard working at a nearby construction site heard the commotion and began firing at the suspect as he ran to the scene. The suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Akil Scott Jackson, again shot at his girlfriend, but his gun jammed.

Two men and a woman driving by the scene jumped out of their cars to get the children to safety and drove the woman to get help. One witness wrestled Jackson to the ground, who pulled out a knife and got away.

Jackson was stopped by an Akron police officer, at which point he shot himself and later died.

The security guard and the woman's children were not injured.
