Flash flood warning issued for several Northeast Ohio counties; Rocky River bulkhead already breached

Residents are asked to avoid the river.

The rain just keep coming, and Northeast Ohioans have to be on alert.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the following counties:

  • Cuyahoga (through 9:30 p.m. Thursday)
  • Lorain (through 9:30 p.m. countywide, southwest portion until 11 p.m.)
  • Medina (through 11 p.m.)
  • Summit (through 9:30 p.m. northern, through 11 p.m. southern)
  • Geauga (through 10:15 p.m.)
  • Wayne (northern portion of county through 11 p.m.)
  • Ashland (northern portion of county through 11 p.m.)
  • Trumbull (through 11:15 p.m.)

Officials say roughly an inch of rain has already fallen, with more on the way. Some of the areas expected to be hit hardest include Cleveland, Akron, Elyria, and Medina.

Right now, one area taking a particular pounding is Rocky River. City officials are advising all residents to stay clear of the river due to high water already breaching the bulkhead. Morewood Parkway is also closed between Beachwood Drive and Erie Road.

Our Tiffany Tarpley also reported standing water causing road closures in Lakewood:

Meanwhile, the problems continue in Stark and Summit counties as the additional heavy rains are adding to the already difficult conditions. Brandon Simmons and Amani Abraham have team coverage:

In addition, a flash flood warning is also in effect for Erie County and the northwestern portion of Huron County. However, that warning is only expected to last until 8 p.m.

Drivers are reminded to "turn around, don't drown." The Cleveland Metroparks have also taken notice of the impending weather, canceling tonight's Edgewater Live concert for the third time in four weeks.
