100 college-bound Hispanic students receive scholarships to offset higher education costs

Esperanza Cleveland hosts its annual Fiesta of Hope

The future is a lot brighter for 100 Hispanic students who received scholarships Friday at Esperanza's Fiesta of Hope luncheon at Cleveland’s Renaissance Hotel.

Many of the kids are the first in their families to go to college.

Esperanza Cleveland grants scholarships to students either entering or continuing their college education. Thirty-three percent of the scholarships went to first time recipients.

To qualify, applicants are evaluated on their academic achievements, quality of personal statements, a recommendation letter, an interview, volunteerism and family income.

The students will attend or are attending 15 different colleges and universities in Ohio and at least 4 other states. They are studying under 40 different majors, including nursing, engineering, and education.

All the scholarships are provided through sponsorships from local businesses, organizations and private donors. WKYC is proud to sponsor a student, Marisa Nieves who is studying Film and Broadcast Journalism.

WKYC’s Russ Mitchell was emcee of the event. It was his 8th year hosting the Fiesta of Hope luncheon.
