First snow storm of the season hits Northeast Ohio: As it happened

Here's a minute-by-minute update of how this wintry blast is unfolding and impacting areas throughout Northeast Ohio.

CLEVELAND — The official start of winter doesn't actually arrive until Dec. 21, but that hasn't stopped Mother Nature from unleashing the first accumulating snow of the season for a portion of Northeast Ohio.

Below are time-stamped updates of how the first wintry blast of the season impacted Northeast Ohio.

TUESDAY, NOV. 12, 2019

10:20 p.m.

Finally, some good news! The Winter Storm Warning has been canceled, but a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is now in effect until 10 a.m. for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula Counties. Lake effect snow will continue through the night for mainly the primary snow belt.

Also, we have a rundown of the snowfall totals so far throughout the area:

6:30 p.m.

So how bad was your drive out there today? Imagine being our Romney Smith, who is experiencing her first Northeast Ohio winter! Romney got a helping hand from a local driving school to get her ready to tackle the wintry roads.

3:30 p.m.

A portion of I-80 is currently closed in both directions following a 50-vehicle pileup near Youngstown. Details are still developing.

12:30 p.m.: One person is dead following a multi-vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike near Richfield. 3News streamed live from the scene earlier:

In addition, a crash has closed a portion of Route 8 southbound near 303.

11:26 a.m.: Driving conditions continue to be difficult. 3News' Carl Bachtel snapped this photo of a fender-bender on Route 8 near Akron

11:15 a.m.: 3News streamed the drive from Summit County toward the east side and back downtown. Driving conditions improved the closer our crews got to downtown.

10:50 a.m. A total of 11 weather alerts remain in effect -- including a Winter Storm Warning until 10 a.m. Wednesday for Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties.

9 p.m. 3News Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling offers an in-depth look ahead at the wintry blast to show how conditions are expected to change throughout the weather event.

6:14 p.m. Mike Polk Jr. heads to Chardon -- the snow belt capital of Ohio -- to see how they're preparing for the winter storm:

6 p.m. Snowflakes are flying throughout Northeast Ohio, but the air and ground temperatures remain warm enough for the snow to melt on contact. Roadways remain wet.

5 p.m. Just a friendly reminder:

4 p.m. Winter Storm Warnings take effect in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties. Winter Weather Advisories also begin in Lorain, Medina, Portage, Summit, Trumbull, Ashland, Richland and Wayne counties.
