Report | HBO Max has 'Friends' reunion special in the works

The six stars and the show's creators are reportedly in discussion on a reunion project for HBO Max

Social media is abuzz with the news that the cast of Friends are reportedly in talks to reunite for a special on HBO Max.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to reveal the news of the possible reunion. According to THR's Leslie Goldberg, talks are currently underway for an unscripted reunion special that would feature Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, as well as series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman.

Sources caution that a deal is far from done and agreements with cast and creatives still need to be hammered out. HBO Max and producers WBTV declined comment.

A favorite among critics and fans alike throughout its 10-season run, Friends not only won the Emmy® for Outstanding Comedy Series, but also garnered Emmy® Awards for series stars Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow.

The news of the possible reunion comes as Friends celebrates the 25th anniversary of its launch on NBC in September, 1994. To mark the anniversary, Fathom Events is bringing eight Thanksgiving-themed episodes of the legendary series to movie theaters across the U.S. over two days: November 24 at 7 p.m. and November 25 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. (all local times).

Each day will feature four unique episodes that have been newly remastered in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative.

Last month, AT&T announced that its HBO Max streaming service will launch in May for $15 a month. The service will offer movies and programs from HBO and the WarnerMedia library, including "Friends," which it will pull back from Netflix. Other hits like "The Big Bang Theory" and "South Park" will also be available.
