2 adults, 8 children escape fire in University Heights

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — Two adults and eight children safely escaped an early morning house fire Saturday in University Heights.

Fire officials say it was around 3:03 a.m. when firefighters responded to the two-story residence in the 4400 block of Groveland Road.

The University Heights Fire Department said it appeared the flames began in the area of the HVAC unit in the basement before extending horizontally across the floor joists and vertically up the laundry chute.

The fire, which was ruled accidental, was brought under control by 3:26 a.m.

Additional resources were dispatched from surrounding departments, including Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, South Euclid, Beachwood and Lyndhurst.

Fire officials say the home was equipped with working smoke detectors.
