Minneapolis police officer shot near patrol car

KARE-TV (Minneapolis)

MINNEAPOLIS — Police say they have one person in custody after a shooting that sent a Minneapolis police officer to the hospital Saturday morning.

According to authorities, the officer was shot at approximately 5 a.m. when he and another officer were responding to a domestic call. Police say the two officers were standing near their marked squad car at the time of the shooting.

The injured officer's partner took him to North Memorial Medical Center where authorities say he is currently in fair condition.

Later Saturday afternoon, police said they arrested a 43-year-old man in relation to the domestic call. They say he was arrested for probation violation, probable cause burglary and probable cause domestic aggravated assault. Police say the victim in the domestic assault case knows the man and is cooperating with authorities.

According to Assistant Chief Matt Clark, investigators are lookingintothe link between the domestic assault case and the officer's shooting.

"Its clear to us that the officer was shot in relation to his response to the call. It didn't seem that, related to the information we have at this time, that there would be any reason to shoot this officer other than him being targeted for doing his job," Clark said.
