Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are taking the reins of Marvel Studios' A-team with "Avengers: Trinity War."

They know Captain America really well, but now Anthony and Joe Russo are getting to play with Marvel Studios' A-team.

The Russos have been tapped to direct the blockbuster two-part Avengers: Infinity War event, taking over the reins of the superhero group from Joss Whedon. Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1 is scheduled to be released in theaters May 2018 with Part 2 arriving a year later.

Whedon's next film in the franchise, Avengers: Age of Ultron, opens in theaters May 1.

After directing the comedy You, Me and Dupree and episodes of Community and Arrested Development, the Russo brothers made their Marvel debut in 2014 with the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which grossed $715 million globally. The Russos also begin filming this month in Atlanta on Captain America: The Civil War, with stalwart Avengers stars Chris Evans as Cap and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.

Both of the Russos — who recently launched Getaway Productions at Sony Pictures — are big comic-book fans, which will come in handy since Infinity War is slated to feature cosmic villain Thanos and a huge number of superheroes.

However, Anthony Russo told USA TODAY on the Winter Soldier set in 2013 that they look out for the casual movie-goer with these films as well, "satisfying the geek in us but at the same time making sure everything is relatable to virgin eyes and ears of new viewers."
